Alex Murray Construction | Stornoway - Western - Isle of Lewis | Renewables - Building Contractors - PlumbersEnvironmental Policy & Action Statement

The Company wholeheartedly supports the principle of environmental improvement and sustainable development. We believe that it is in the Company’s best interests, and those of all who work in it, to ensure that the environment is protected and improved. To this end, within the framework of the law, we are committed, wherever practicable, to achieving and maintaining an environmental improvement policy. Every possible step will be taken to ensure that the environment is protected and improved wherever possible.

Examples

Through a ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ strategy we are looking to minimize our environmental footprint. The first step in this direction is to cut down on waste; taking care to make material take-offs more precise. The next step is to re-use materials which have not been used and are still fit for purpose. The third step is to recycle materials which can no longer be used: we recycle all paper from our head-office and in the future we plan to move into the recycling of plastics, metals, timber, rubble and all sorts of materials. Our end-goal is to be sending zero waste to landfill!

In our drive to reduce fuel consumption we have fitted 15 of our vehicles with vehicle tracking devices. This is intended to make operatives answerable to their fuel use and to cut down on excessive vehicle use and speeding. As well as this we have a transport management system in place which aims to ensure that there are no more vans on site than are completely necessary.

Alex Murray Construction | Stornoway - Western - Isle of Lewis | Renewables - Building Contractors - PlumbersBeing a locally run business, we recognise the importance of putting back into the community what the community has helped us to achieve. In doing this we give continued support in the form of money, free labour, materials and plant to local and national charities as well as events run across the Island. Those who have benefited from this include the Stornoway Running Club, The Moldova Fund, Blytheswood, Bethesda Nursing Home, the Ness Charity Shop, Ness Football Club, and numerous cattle shows and carnivals.

As well as supporting local charities we also opt to support local businesses – sub-contractors and material suppliers – where possible and practical to do so. We see the value and importance of employing people who live on the island, therefore contributing to the local economy and culture.
